Evangel Baptist Church

In the summer of 1957 Area Missionary John Snedden came to Steubenville, Ohio with two summer workers.
A large tent was erected and a revival meeting scheduled. It was very discouraging.
The high attendance for the revival was 13 (including Brother Snedden, Mrs. Snedden, and two summer workers).
Out of this meeting, however, a few families were located in the general area and a mission established.
These families were in the area temporarily as construction workers.
In September of the same year J. Pat Brock and family arrived from El Paso Texas.
Brother Brock came as Pastoral Missionary. After a couple of months it was decided to move the mission across the river to Weirton, WV.
In January the mission became a church with 23 members. Before the month was ended most of the members had moved away.
With one construction family and a lady from Weirton along with the pastors’ family a new start was made.
There were 10 members; 5 of these were in the pastor’s family.
Realizing that no work is secure unless it is built on the native population the little group
set out to reach and win the native West Virginians living in Weirton.
By March a house was purchased to serve as combination church auditorium, Sunday School and pastorium.
Soon the work began to grow. In 1960 ground was broken for a church building. March of 1961 the congregation moved to the new location.
The church had grown to 162 local members and about 50 members in their 3 missions.
During the 6 years 2 missions became churches. One of these, the Pittsburg Baptist Church, gave birth to 2 churches and operated 2 missions.
Of the 162 members at Weirton over 150 came by baptism.
The church had a Sunday School enrolment of 235 and a Training Union enrolment of 92.
During the 6 years Southern Baptist work showed tremendous growth in the Upper Ohio Valley and Tri-State area.
The first association was organized 4 years later and out of it a new association was organized in the fall
(The Greater Pittsburgh Association) and had 4 churches and 7 missions. The first area missionary for
Western Pennsylvania was appointed the following January.
