Temple Baptist Church

Temple Baptist Church was started by a group of construction workers who had come to
West Virginia to work in 1955. Since there was no Southern Baptist work in the area they took it upon
themselves to plant a new Southern Baptist Church in the Moundsville area.
The group originally met a dark green building that resembled an army barracks that was located near the
East End Playground in the vicinity where the Four Season’s pool parking lot is now located.

The church began as Mt. Zion Baptist Chapel in 1955. The church constituted on February 9, 1956
under the leadership of Pastor William A. Clutts with 30 members from the south and 11 local members.
The church originally affiliated with the Ohio State Convention and the Scioto Valley Baptist Association,
with associational ties to churches in Pittsburgh, PA., Morgantown, WV, Bridgeport, WV,
as well as those in Ohio, because Southern Baptist work in the north was very widespread.

In 1957 the church changed its name to Temple Baptist Church.
Then in 1960 the church hosted a meeting that led to the formation of the Upper Ohio Valley Baptist Association
affiliating with the new association. In 1967 Temple Baptist also began working with the
Baptist General Association of West Virginia, and then in 1970 the church affiliated
with the West Virginia Convention of Southern Baptists.

Temple Baptist has been involved with the beginning of several church plants over its years of existence,
sponsoring a new mission in New Martinsville, WV in 1962 called the First Southern Baptist Mission,
Immanuel Baptist Church in New Martinsville, WV in 1974, Edgewood Baptist Chapel in Wheeling, WV in 1982,
Cameron Baptist Church in Cameron, WV in 1984, Wheeling Community Church in North Wheeling, WV in 2008,
and co-sponsor, along with all the other churches that make up the Upper Ohio Valley Baptist Association,
Grace Church at Pleasant Valley, Cameron, WV in 2009.

Temple Baptist has been mission minded since its inception being stated by those who had missions at their heart.
May Temple Baptist Church, through God’s grace, continue to reach out to its surrounding area, its state,
its nation, and its world with the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Over the years the church has grown, bought, built, and remodeled in its present location at
2300 Second Street, Moundsville, WV. At this same location stood The Disabled Americans Veterans Club (bar),
which is part of the present church structure. To God be the glory! Amen.
